Akron is launching a new way for residents to shape the future of their city. On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, community leaders will formally announce Akron’s first-ever Civic Assembly, a locally led, resident-powered process that puts Akronites at the center of public problem-solving.
For the first time in Akron, a representative group of residents will be selected by lottery, supported to participate fully, and given time, information, and responsibility to deliberate on solutions to address the city's critical challenges.
Similar Civic Assemblies around the world have shaped public policy, resolved complex challenges, and strengthened trust in democratic decision-making. In Akron, that work will begin with housing.
The press conference, hosted by Unify Akron, will introduce the Assembly's purpose and structure and outline what’s ahead in 2026 to strengthen civic decision-making and shared accountability. Speakers include:
Mayor Shammas Malik, City of Akron
Margo Sommerville, President, Akron City Council
Dr. J. Cherie Strachan, Director, Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics
Robert DeJournett, Pastor and Co-Founder, Summit County Black Chamber of Commerce
Dominique Waters, Founder, Akron Sneaker Academy
Zac Kohl, Executive Director, The Well CDC
Morgan Lasher, Chief, U.S. Democracy Leagues at Unify America
