It’s unanimous! Akron City Council Affirms Support for the Civic Assembly

Last night, the Akron City Council took an important step forward for housing in our city.

In a unanimous vote, all 13 members of Council passed a resolution affirming their support for Unify Akron and the Akron Civic Assembly on Housing. The resolution confirms Council’s shared commitment to collaboration, transparency, and meaningful action as Akron residents come together to help shape solutions to the city’s housing challenges.

The resolution formally supports the partnership outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this month between the City of Akron and Unify Akron. It recognizes the Civic Assembly as a resident-led process designed to bring together a representative group of Akronites to learn, deliberate, and develop practical recommendations on housing affordability.

Just as importantly, the City Council committed to:

  • Working openly and collaboratively with Unify Akron

  • Giving serious and thoughtful consideration to the Assembly’s recommendations

  • Acting transparently on any recommendations that require legislative action

By declaring the resolution an emergency measure, Council also underscored the urgency of Akron’s housing challenges and the need to quickly stand up the Assembly so residents’ voices can help guide next steps.

This vote sends a clear signal: Akron’s elected leaders are ready to listen, engage, and work alongside residents to address housing in a serious and accountable way.

Thank you to Akron City Council for this show of leadership and unity. As the Civic Assembly gets underway this spring, this resolution helps ensure that residents’ work will be met with real attention and real pathways to action.
