Dr. Carla Chapman named as Unify Akron’s first Managing Director
Longtime Akron leader brings more than 32 years of experience in education, community engagement and collaboration.
Dr. Carla Chapman
Unify Akron has named Dr. Carla Chapman as its first Managing Director, marking an important milestone for the organization. The appointment builds on the success of Akron's first Civic Assembly and advances Unify Akron's mission to create lasting opportunities for residents to deliberate together and have a meaningful voice in decisions shaping their community.
A respected community leader and longtime advocate for education and collaboration, Chapman brings more than 32 years of experience building partnerships, removing barriers and creating opportunities for meaningful community engagement.
"Carla has spent her career bringing people together, building trust and creating lasting change," said Morgan Lasher, Chief of U.S. Democracy Leagues at Unify America. "Her leadership and deep connection to Akron make her the ideal person to guide this next chapter."
Chapman's appointment follows a landmark first year for Unify Akron. In 2026, the organization convened Akron's inaugural Civic Assembly on Housing, bringing together 65 randomly selected, representative residents to deliberate on recommendations addressing the city's housing challenges. As Managing Director, Chapman will help build on that momentum, strengthen community partnerships and advance resident-centered decision-making in Akron.
"Akron is a community filled with people who care deeply about its future," said Dr. Carla Chapman. "What excites me about Unify Akron is the opportunity to bring those voices together in meaningful ways. When people feel heard, respected, and empowered to contribute, we can build stronger connections and create lasting change. I'm honored to help lead this work."
Before retiring from Akron Public Schools, Chapman served in several leadership roles, including Chief Diversity Officer and Chief of Community Relations and Strategic Engagement. Throughout her career, she championed initiatives that addressed educational inequities, strengthened community relationships and removed barriers to student success.
She holds a doctorate in Interprofessional Leadership from Kent State University, along with advanced training spanning deliberative dialogue, emotional intelligence, community mediation, and culturally responsive educational practices. A proud Akron resident, she remains active in nonprofit and community organizations and is passionate about creating opportunities for all residents to thrive.
